A Story of War

I return to Razani today. Hired a car from Modern Motor Works for 45/-. There is a fellow wanting to go Bannu way, so he buys the contract for RS 5/- so that I might have hired him straight for 40/-. He is a Pathan and a wag. He offers me hard boiled eggs, purchased on the roadside. I try to get the Khassadar to sit on the luggage grid, there being insufficient room in the back seat, and this causes much ‘bat’ and merriment. It is then explained to me that he may fall off, and anyhow the dushmen will not see him in the car, and may open fire. I think he is a bit windy of being exposed to a chance bullet.
