July 14th 1940 – Manzai

Manzai – came down on the convoy two days ago – 10 British officers. We have to sit in the back as we are too good aiming marks in the front seat; or so they say. Up to Sarawakai I stand in the back of my lorry, being the most comfortable position, and then nip into an ambulance which is following and get a good ride the rest of the way. What a place. I try to sleep outside and am nearly suffocated. Arthur left on the DIK convoy this morning and I take the ‘Heatstroke Express’ tomorrow at 6am with Shaw (2/2), Maclean and Collins (1/18). The 3/8 keep a good John Collins here, made by Andy the Madras Khitnagar.
