September 12th 1940

Letter from Ma saying Hugh missing on 11th June. “He went on a raid in his Blenheim, the most glorious hot day and though no fighter was after him, he was under fearful A.A. barrage and went up to 7000′ and was seen no more – ” Peggy (JDW: Hugh’s new wife) produces a daughter some few days ago too.

I work in Brigade now, two or three days, as the battalion out training, an interesting interlude, what with all the secret stuff and seeing how things work. It’s getting cold here now and depression, mental and physical, is setting in. I don’t seem very fit these days, I must say, and nothing ever happens, one day succeeding another.
