January 17th 1941 – at sea

Reached Kuhawei this morning, a small island off Oman Peninsula leased as a naval depot. We land provisions for R.I.N. sloop present in the bay. Saw some nasty looking garfish. The Chief Engineer won’t tell me a thing as he says it’s all top secret, but had it all from the first mate this afternoon. Now in Bandar Abbas and there’s an Italian ship that’s been taking refuge here since the war began. A low lying coastline and a bit of a haze, but it seems a bigger town than any so far.

Two Italian submarines caught by HMS Falmouth up here some six months or so ago. One was trapped owing to its rendez-vous being discovered in the papers of the captain of the one brought into Aden by a trawler some months ago.
