March 2nd 1941

Have been trying formation flying and am regarded as pretty dangerous at it, I think. I am also shown a forced landing, so have now got plenty to think about. The other night we went night flying. I get a bit depressed after doing three bloody awful bumps, but eventually satisfy Garner and am allowed up solo in the Audax, which is much easier. The camp looks like Brighton seafront at night, with all the lights on. Life just “chills” on here, with nothing of interest to note. I flew over Ramadi with the official war map and most of the old trenches can still be seen. (JDW: Ramadi was taken by British forces in November 1917 from the remains of the Ottoman forces).

I have got to volume III of the Official History, with one more to go after that.
