April 17th 1941

Got my ‘wings’ yesterday, Went up and found W/V by three course method (JDW: anyone have any ideas of what he is talking about here?) in an Oxford and didn’t do too badly.

Then big flap yesterday and another formation flight ordered, this time presumably over Baghdad. I get a Hart to myself in S/Ldr Platsis’s flight and we “stand to” from 8-11.30 when it is cancelled. Aircraft dispersed everywhere, and all over the polo ground too.

Piles of leaflets, printed in Jerusalem and Cairo, have arrived so I hope I am allowed to drop some. Pete didn’t get his ‘wings’ having failed in navigation. A year ago I had the mustard gas, and the mark is still on my forearm.

  1. To what is he referring when he writes, “A year ago I had the mustard gas, and the mark is still on my forearm”?
