June 29th 1942

I go to the races with Mark and Grubb-Bell, the new adjutant, and we run a syndicate which only backs one winner so not too good. Then we return a woman to the Pinewood and G-B gets out to try out Barclay’s car which is for sale – I hop out too and get myself invited to Pinewood first, Pat there and all! Then we drive back to the mess in it, and then to the club where I have to join a party of his, which rather cramps my style.

Pat arrives very late in a large party, and I leave it too late and don’t get a dance with her. I ring up today and ask her to the pictures but she’s going out, so I’m going to have tea with her instead. Let’s hope I acquit myself well and don’t put up a black. Off tomorrow, but a bridge down, so have to go by Sylbet way.
