May 7th 1944

Both operation orders 2 and 3 fail and I have to give up the struggle and see what God will provide. Sunday we go to the American’s tea (175 Regiment) where is fruit salad and ice cream and chocolate sauce, which apparently was never seen in the UK since the war started. Then to Findlays for dinner where I nearly die of laughing, as everyone is deaf and the noise of shouting is terrific. The old colonel even says “Wish I was twenty years younger!”

Monday I sit on the beach in the afternoon with Denise and discover that she doesn’t mean half the things she says – so now I know where I stand. Also I go into “Sloop” which opens after having been shut about a week through lack of supplies. Meet one Barry Mitchell, Captain in the ?, there.
