May 12th 1944 – St Ives

Who thought of sunbathing in England! I go and drink whisky with Jim and Sue Fraser (Commandoes), stay to dinner and we go up to Tregenna. Meet Co. Warfield and we get in a sort of party, but containing nothing worth looking at. Vivian looking a bit lovesick with her American. Get to bed 12.30 a bit depressed, and have to pull myself together this morning or I shall let it get me down – and what good will that do. Damn the Americans! What I really require is a girlfriend after all the years living in goddamned places.

  1. When he writes “Commandoes” as in “Jim and Sue Fraser (Commandoes)”, what does it mean?,

  2. A Gray, he’s referring to the unit the husband is assigned to. Wife is following him vs staying at home. Various diary entries from the last 2 yrs mention couples where the husband is Army, RAF, RN, etc

That’s right, it covers the unit the husband belonged to.
