August 11th 1939 – Razani

Up Dun the other day, but no shooting. I chat with the locals in Pashtu and Urdu fairly successfully. Colonel May was shot in his car yesterday evening, outside Bannu on the Mari Indus road. He dined here about 10 days ago, with District HQ staff. The Frenchman is staying with us now and Major Callander is very amusing about him. A French Canadian comes into the Mess last guest night, and gets as pissed as an owl – and aggressive too. A letter from Johnny Benbow, who reckons on going to 4/15 in Landi Kotal. I hear from Tony Ward, and under section 143(1) I get Indian Army allowance from date of passing Higher Urdu. Therefore on September’s pay bill I ought to collect just under 800 chips.
